Securing an impressive total of four wins and eleven places from 33 race starts to date, talented New Zealand import Floria has been included in nominations for the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes.

Contesting a particularly strong and consistent 2013 racing calendar, Floria was a leading performer over the short Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival; unlucky to finish second in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) and third in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

Returning in spring in similarly blistering form, the Savabeel mare finished third in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) first-up and sixth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Summond Stakes (1600m) on November 16th.

While unable to find the line in the clear over three starts this time in, Floria was unlucky when second to Five All in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) first-up on March 1st.

Disappointing in her two most recent appearances, trainer Peter Moody has been happy with the way Floria has taken to work over the last fortnight, and is confident she will perform in her South Australian debut this weekend.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes is talented local Maybe Discreet.

Saddled by leading South Australian trainer Phillip Stokes at Morphettville, Maybe Discreet claimed the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) with ease on this weekend in 2013 and has returned to the track this season in similarly strong condition.

Unlucky when blocked for a run and sixth in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) first-up on March 10th, the Shamardal mare strolled home to win the Listed City Of Adelaide Quality (1400m) last time out, and will pose a serious threat to all competition this weekend, particularly if allocated a favourable gate at Wednesday’s Queen Of The South barrier draw.

Trainer Anthony Cummings is poised to be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes, having nominated both Crucial and Kazanluk for an appearance this weekend.

Securing one win and four places from eight race starts this preparation alone, Crucial arguably offers Freedman his best chance of success in the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes, having trialled over both course and distance previously; finishing sixth amongst classy competition in the 2013 edition of the same event.

Champion of the 2012 Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m) most notably, Kazanluk finished third over 1400 metres in her only 2014 appearance so far, but will pose a serious threat if in ideal running position rounding the final bend.

A final field of 18 plus emergencies and barrier draw for the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes are due to be released on Wednesday morning.
