2014 Queen Of The South Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 23rd, 2014

An exciting field of fourteen fillies and mares have been confirmed to contest the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) at South Australia’s Morphettville racecourse this weekend, including talented local Maybe Discreet.

Securing five wins and four places from only sixteen race starts to date, Maybe Discreet has quickly worked towards the forefront of South Australian racing, particularly over an impressive 2013 autumn preparation which delivered an unlucky second in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) and a resounding victory in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) on April 27th.

Returning to the track in typically strong form this time in, the Shamardal mare was unlucky when blocked for a run and sixth in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) first-up on March 10th before returning to the winner’s circle with a comfortably victory in the Listed City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) last time out.

While charged with carrying a race high weight of 59.5kgs and allocated the slightly awkward barrier 11, trainer Phillip Stokes is confident regular jockey Dom Tourneur will get the most from his entrant once again this weekend.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes is talented Kiwi import Floria.

Contesting four wins and eleven places from 33 race starts so far, Floria has taken to Australian courses particularly well since arriving to the care of trainer Peter Moody at the conclusion of her 2012/13 summer preparation.

Finishing outside the places in just one of four maiden preparation starts over autumn, the Savabeel mare was unlucky to finish second in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) first-up; closing her strong campaign second in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) and third in the hotly-contested Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm.

Continuing her impressive form through three appearances in the 2013 spring, Floria is yet to hit peak condition over three starts this time in, but is offered a prime opportunity to reverse her fortunes in the Queen Of The South Stakes, having been allocated the ideal barrier 4 and confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Luke Nolen.

Currently racing in arguably career-best form, talented four-year-old Double Dee has been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes, and will leave from the wide barrier 14.

Winning four of 16 starts and placing in a further seven, the Dubleo mare was impressive over minor events in the spring of 2013, and while yet to contest an event at Group level, has more than earned her place in this weekend’s Group 2 at Morphettville.

Strolling home to win the Members Race Day Fillies Maiden (1200m) first-up on March 12th, Double Dee was unlucky when blocked for a run and second in the Pantry Packer Handicap (1523m) last time out.

Claiming four wins and one place from on eight competitive starts to date, Tango’s Daughter has burst onto the racing scene for trainer Mick Price, but will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 9 if to continue her good run of form in the Queen Of The South Stales.

Unlucky to finish third in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) first-up on March 8th, the Redoute’s Choice filly will be aiming for her first hat trick of wins this weekend, having taken out the Hilton Manufacturing Fillies Maiden (1300m) and Listed HC Nitschke Stakes (1400m) in her two most recent starts.

Little-known New Zealander Notice Received will leave from the inside barrier in the 2014 Queen Of The South Stakes.
