2016 Queen Of The South Stakes Field and Barrier Draw

May 4th, 2016

A talented and capacity field of eighteen fillies and mares has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Adelaide Autumn Carnival’s most exciting prospects.

Darren Weir is set to dominate the running of the Group 2 feature after confirming a total of four of his stable’s stars in the Queen Of The South Stakes field, including Atlantis Dream and Hijack Hussy.

Winner of last year’s edition of the Queen Of The South Stakes, Atlantis Dream has been a strong and consistent performer for Weir in posting six wins and eight minors through only twenty-one competitive starts.

Resuming this time for second in the Gold Bracelet (1400m) on March 19th, the Elusive City mare ran on for third in the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap (1600m) on April 9th before finishing second in the Flight Lieutenant Peter Armytage Handicap (1700m) on April 25th.

Charged with overcoming the awkward barrier 17, Atlantis Dream will be partnered by notable hoop Luke Nolan this weekend.

Transferring from the care of leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan after a reasonably hapless winter campaign in 2015, Hijack Hussy debuted for Weir with a credible performance for third in the Mrs Mac’s Family Bakery Sprint (1100m) on March 5th.

Progressing to fourth in the Gold Bracelet, the Hussonet mare savaged the line for second in the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap before a luckless fifth with 60kgs in tow in the William Newton VC BM84 (1610m) on April 25th.

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig have confirmed a strong contingent for Saturday’s Morphettville card and will saddle consistent mare Metaphorical in the Queen Of The South Stakes.

Amazingly yet to break through for a black type win, Metaphorical has posted an impressive four wins and ten minors through her twenty-five career starts since first appearing on course in 2013.

Having returned to the paddock for a brief freshen-up following a credible run for fourth in the Piping Lane Handicap (2000m) on January 16th, the Dylan Thomas mare resumed for a close second in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) on March 12th before running third in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) on March 24th.
